Laura Kramer is an artist and designer that has degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design, Ohio State University, and an MA in anthropology from Columbia University (from where she had studied archaeology). Currently though, Laura is known as a wonderful Glass Artist! She has a studio in Rhode Island where she creates glass sculptures using her knowledge of archaeology and anthropology. She herself stated that, "I am interested in the connection of the imbued spirit within the object. My work is deeply influenced by the cabinet of curiosities—odd objects that may not be easily categorized.".

Memento Mori
Glass/Mixed Media
The sculpture above represents one of Laura's many works. I like this piece specifically due to the use of both glass and other objects to create a work with a natural aesthetic. The glass is specifically placed in order to show the meaning of the piece and the significance of which each unique object holds. Laura's passion for art and archaeology are clearly seen in this work through the mimicked crystal formation and composition using "old" objects from nature . As said by the Colossal article the work also shows "land in a liminal space when examined from an anthropological point of view." which is a message Laura would hope her piece relayed.
I would love to use this same technique of using both glass and found objects in order to create a sculpture with a deep meaning to me, just as Laura did with this piece!

Glass
21 x 9 x 6 inches The work above is another glass sculpture made by Laura Kramer! This sculpture is different from the previous in that it only uses glass, however, this doesn't make it any less appealing. The use of small details in the glass create a bead-looking effect that draws me into the work. It's appearance reminds me of a piece of coral or sea plant that has layers that are intricate. This piece once again shows Laura's interest in both the arts and anthropology and archaeology, and I can clearly see how she infuses both passions into her works (as seen in the piece above!). Overall this piece is eye-catching and has the perfect balance of meaning and appearance!
From this specific piece I'd love to replicate the amount of detail and color used to indicate different aspects of the sculpture, so that I can then make a work just as appealing and meaningful!
Listed below are a couple more sculptures of Laura's that I found:
