Progress Post Project #2

Below are photos that represent my current progress with in-class project # 2. I began my process of creating the piece by sketching out the object lightly onto the paper to get a sense of the composition and where I would begin to add the charcoal/detail. Then I started to test out the charcoal on different sheets of paper as I am still relatively new to using this material. After I felt confident enough with the material, I started to add detail on the actual work itself. I first blocked out big sections of the pen with the vine Charcoal, being careful to leave the "calligraphy" part white. After this, I started the subtractive part on the tip of the pen by using a kneaded eraser to take away the charcoal and establish light, middle, and dark tones in order to allude to the sense of value. As I continue to work on this I will finish the rest of the detail further up the pen and go back into the area where the letters are to add white Conte in order to draw attention to them even better.
