Career Blog Post (#4)

The career I chose is a corporate curator of art. A corporate curator is someone who manages the art collection of a company, aligns it with a brand identity, oversees attainment, documentation, installation, and the rotation of art. This is overall to enhance the workplace environment and reflect deeply on the company's values. Responsibilities for someone with this career includes ensuring the safety of the artworks/artifacts, buying/loaning the works, cataloging, documenting certain works for the company, exhibition management, writing labels, and brand alignment. This career also requires at least a bachelor's degree in the field of Art History, Fine Arts, or a related field. However, for some instances the minimum is a Master's degree (MA) in Art History, Museum Studies, or Arts Management. In addition to having the educational requirements to be a corporate curator a certain skill set is needed. This would include extensive knowledge of art history and contemporary art, budget management, a strong understanding of branding, design, and cultural trends, and great negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills.

If you are looking to pursue this career some of the best majors/programs to help prepare you would be a major in Art History, Fine Arts, or Museum Studies for your bachelor's. For pursuing a Master's degree, one in Museum Studies or Curatorial Practice would be suitable. All of these majors provide foundational skills in planning/management which is a key aspect of becoming a proficient art corporate curator. For specific schools with notable programs for this career I would suggest the Williams College/Clark Art Institute, Yale University, Princeton University, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago all of which are exceptional institutes to prepare for this career. Another great option could be the Rhode Island School of Design or the Pratt Institute.
